Two-tone is always a bit controversial, but for those who love it, they
really love it. Much is the case with the Rolex Datejust ref. 116201,
which while an easily loved watch by its Datejust qualities, is a real
stunner with its rose gold bezel and crown against its famed 36mm
stainless steel oyster case.
When it was launched in the mid-2000s, the ref. 116201 served as part of
Rolex's next generation of two-tone, smooth bezel Datejust options. In
many ways, the reference represented the brand leaving the past behind
and entering the modern age, helping popularize the now extremely
appealing use of Everose gold in Rolex's modern catalog, but further
making use of the brand's next generation material, Oystersteel, made of
904L stainless steel, in its second tone. Take these new materials and
apply them to a traditional 36mm oyster style case with a 100m water
resistance, and you find yourself an extremely versatile and casually
elegant modern Rolex unlike much else available from the brand or
otherwise.
Notably, the 116201 was one of the last Datejust references to feature the highly esteemed Rolex caliber 3135
